What happens when we start with what connects us instead of what sets us apart?

The Person Behind the Scarf explores what connects people in a society where differences are becoming increasingly visible. She portrays eleven Vitesse supporters with different backgrounds and life stories. What may set them apart at first glance gives way to something they share: their love for the same club.

The scarf symbolises common ground. A place where differences do not disappear, but where there is room to meet one another. Where ‘they’ makes room for ‘us’. Alongside the portraits, the participants created their own images of what the scarf and Vitesse mean to them.

Vitesse is one example of what can bring people together. Common ground can emerge anywhere: in a club, a neighbourhood, a shared interest, or something small that brings people together. By looking at what we share, we create space to meet one another again.
